Ch:1- Introduction

Philip Nott and his wife Martha Jane Wright migrated from England to Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1873, travelling on the ‘Royal Dane’.

Why they chose Brisbane to make their home is a mystery, given that Martha’s parents and siblings all migrated to America at the same time, and settled in New York State. Martha’s father, a Wesleyan minister named the Rev. John Bee Wright was a controversial figure in London at that time, and this may have influenced their decision.

The Nott family lived in the small village of Gorran Churchtown and nearby Trevarrick Farm in Cornwall  for many generations, and the Wright family originally came from Norfolk and Suffolk- the small villages of Aldeby and nearby Topcroft (in southern Norfolk near the Suffolk border, and the broads), and Wenhaston in Suffolk near the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve (a very pretty area), and the area of Great Yarmouth and Moulton St Mary, and from the city of Norwich, before eventually settling in London.

This blog is about their journey, their life in the  newly developing city of Brisbane, and their ancestry.
